Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Bistro Barão one of the best restaurants in Évora?

Bistro Barão stands out for our authentic Alentejo cuisine, family-run warmth, and commitment to quality. Since 2014, we've been serving traditional Portuguese dishes made with fresh produce sourced directly from local producers and businesses. Unlike tourist-focused establishments, we offer an intimate dining experience where we strive to give every guest personalised attention. Our private dining option is also unique in Évora—perfect for special occasions where you want complete privacy and dedicated service.

Do you accommodate vegetarians and special dietary requirements?

Absolutely! We take pride in our vegetarian options, which aren't just afterthoughts but carefully crafted celebrating Alentejo's seasonal vegetables and fruits. We have a few options in our menu that can cater for vegetarian and vegan diets. We're also happy to accommodate other dietary needs including gluten-free, dairy-free, and allergy requirements. Just let us know when booking, and we'll ensure your meal is both delicious and safe.

Should I make a reservation, or do you accept walk-ins?

We strongly recommend making a reservation, especially for dinner and weekends. As a very small, family-run restaurant, our seating is limited—which is precisely what creates our intimate atmosphere. Reservations ensure you have a table waiting and allow us to prepare for any special requests or dietary needs. That said, if we have availability, we're always delighted to welcome walk-in guests. For our exclusive private dining experience, advance booking is required.

What are your most popular dishes?

Our menu celebrates traditional Alentejo cuisine, so guest favorites include hearty regional stews, fresh Iberian pork meats, fresh fish and clams and dishes featuring game like partridge and wild duck. Many guests also love our seasonal specials that showcase whatever produce we find suitable. We're happy to recommend dishes based on your preferences—whether you want something boldly flavored, lighter fare, or a true taste of Alentejo tradition. And don't skip our regional wine pairings; they're carefully curated to complement each dish perfectly.

How far is Bistro Barão from Évora's main attractions?

We're located in Évora's historic center, within easy walking distance of the city's UNESCO World Heritage landmarks. After exploring the Roman Temple, Cathedral, or Chapel of Bones, you're just a short stroll from our door. Our location on a quieter street means you'll escape the tourist crowds while still being in the heart of everything. Many guests love ending their day of sightseeing with a relaxed dinner at our intimate restaurant—it's the perfect way to absorb the authentic Évora experience.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, all major credit cards, except AMEX, and debit cards.

Can you host special celebrations?

We love being part of your special moments! Whether it's birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, business dinners, or intimate wedding celebrations, we're experienced in making occasions memorable. Our private dining option is particularly popular for milestone celebrations where you want privacy and personalised attention.

Are you available for media features or collaborations?

We're always honoured to share our story and passion for Alentejo cuisine with food writers, bloggers, and media. Please contact us at ola@bistrobarao.com to discuss features, collaborations, or partnership opportunities.

Are pets allowed at Bistro Barão?

We love animals, but due to health regulations and our intimate dining space, we're unable to accommodate pets inside the restaurant. However, if you're dining during pleasant weather and we have outdoor seating available, well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you at our terrace tables. Service animals are always welcome in accordance with Portuguese law. If you're traveling with a pet, we're happy to find a suitable arrangement while you dine with us. Call us.
